Diamond Carat Size Guide - Diamond Size Charts for All Shapes

There are a range of factors to think about when it comes to diamond carat size.

Diamond carat refers to the weight of the diamond rather than the actual size. This means that the larger the carat, the heavier the diamond will be. One carat is equal to 0.2 grams and one diamond carat is divided into 100 points, meaning that 0.25 of a carat is 25 points or ¼ carat.

It is important to consider the carat and cut together when making a purchase. A larger carat diamond with a poor cut grade can appear smaller than a diamond of the same diamond carat size with a higher cut grade.

Our Diamonds Factory other diamond guides will help you to discover more about the 4 C’s: carat, cut, clarity and colour.

How to determine carat size

One carat is equal to 0.2 grams, and one diamond carat is divided into 100 points, meaning that 0.25 of a carat is 25 points or ¼ carat. The size dimension of a diamond for its weight is a good indicator of its value and desirability. For example, a 1ct round diamond would ideally measure around 6.5mm in diameter, a 1.5ct around 7.2mm and a 2ct diamond approximately 8mm. Ideal diamond dimensions are different for every diamond shape. Dimensions are a good indicator of how well a diamond has been cut for it to reflect the maximum amount of light.

Value of diamonds per carat

The value of diamonds per carat can vary massively depending on the other specifications. Carat weight has a large impact on a diamond’s value, along with cut, colour clarity and certification. This means that even two diamonds of the same carat weight will most likely differ drastically in value.

What to consider

It is important to consider carat and cut together when buying a diamond. A larger carat diamond with a poor cut grade can appear smaller than a diamond of the same size with a higher cut grade.

Tips For Choosing Your Diamond Carat Size

Diamonds Factory is here to help you choose the perfect diamond carat. When you’re looking at diamond carat size, as well as consulting a diamond size chart you should take into consideration:

Finger Size

It’s a good idea to consider the length and width of the ring finger. For example, a diamond will appear larger on longer and slimmer fingers when compared to shorter and wider fingers. Those with shorter fingers may wish to consider diamond shapes which elongate their appearance such as the marquise or pear.

Setting Style

Another important factor to consider is the setting style, as diamonds set in a delicate or slender setting tend to appear larger than those set in a thicker, more solid setting.

Pricing

For shoppers on a slightly tighter budget or looking for value for money, a top tip is to look for diamonds which fall just under popular full carat weights - for example, 0.40, 0.90 or 1.75. As these fall just shy of the most sought-after diamond carats, they are often sold at a preferable rate. For example, a 0.90-carat diamond will typically cost less than a 1.00-carat and visually it is difficult to distinguish between the two in size.

Shapes To Make Diamonds Look Larger

You may wish to take into consideration the diamond shape, as some shapes can make smaller carats look larger. For example, the marquise and pear shape can appear larger due to its elongated cut.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you’re looking for the perfect engagement ring or maybe another special piece of your loved one; the reality of purchasing a diamond really does come down to what you’re looking for in terms of style or expectation, and ultimately your budget. Keep in mind, small differences in carats are not always obvious, and other elements such as setting style and diamond shape can make smaller carat diamonds look just as sophisticated. This is because carats measure the weight of a diamond, not its size or dimensions.
There’s nothing more beautiful than a diamond; it’s no wonder they’re considered an expression of eternal love and the bond of marriage. Unfortunately, the price of diamonds can be out of reach for many people due to the craftsmanship that goes into preparing diamond jewellery. It requires a lot of technique which is why some jewellers charge such high prices for their work. There’s no need to be discouraged, there are a variety of spectacular options which will give a similar dazzling aesthetic, but at a much lower cost. Some of the alternatives to consider include:
* Laboratory-created diamonds
* Moissanite
* White sapphires
Whatever you decide on, Diamonds Factory has an exquisite range of gemstones and diamonds to choose from. Our jewellers are also available to assist you with selecting the most desirable diamond carat size for your budget or occasion.
